What is Cornhole?

History and Origins
The most widespread theory places the birth of Cornhole in the farmlands of Kentucky, where farmers reportedly began playing with corn bags during their free time. The name itself comes from “corn” and “hole.”
Long remaining little-known outside the United States, the game exploded internationally in the 2010s thanks to the rise of outdoor recreation and corporate entertainment.

The surface must be smooth (varnished, painted or stickered) to allow bags to slide. The board is made of plywood at least 1 cm thick.

Modern bags (notably ACL Pro bags) feature two sides with different properties: a fast side (slippery) and a slow side (sticky), enabling advanced game strategies.
Court and Setup
The Cornhole court is a flat rectangular area 2.5 to 3.5 m wide and at least 12 to 13.5 m long. The two boards are placed facing each other.

Throwing Zone
Each player positions themselves in a throwing box (1.2 m × 1 m) on the side of their board. In competition, two foul lines are defined:
– Adults: imaginary line at 8.23 m
– Juniors (≤ 12 years): line at 4 to 6 m
Official Rules
Player Configuration
- Singles (1 vs 1): both players stand on the side of the same board, facing the opponent at the other end.
- Doubles (2 vs 2): teammates face each other, each at one end of the court.
A coin toss determines who throws first. Players then alternate their throws.
Round Sequence
Each player throws their 4 bags in turn (alternating with the opponent). Once all 8 bags have been thrown, the round is complete. Points are counted, then players move to the other board for the next round.

Cancellation Scoring
Only one team scores each round: the difference in points between the two teams.
Example: team A = 5 pts, team B = 2 pts → team A scores 3 points for this round.
Victory
The first team to reach or exceed 21 points at the end of a round wins the game.
Fouls
A foul is committed if:
– A player’s foot crosses the foul line during the throw (foot foul)
– A player throws a bag before the opponent has finished their throws
In case of a foul: the throw is invalidated and the bag removed if it landed on the board.

Bag Sides
Pro double-sided bags allow you to choose your strategy:
– Fast side: the bag slides toward the hole—offensive
– Slow side: the bag stops on the board—defensive or to block access to the hole
Tips for Improvement
- Adopt a stable stance: front foot aligned with the side of the board
- Aim for the upper half of the board to increase chances of scoring in the hole
- Vary between attack (hole) and placement (board) depending on the score
- Observe opponent bags and adapt your strategy (block or clear)
