What is Mölkky?

Mölkky (pronounced “mol-koo”) is a Finnish wooden skittles game, also nicknamed “Finnish skittles“. Its principle is as simple as it is addictive: throw a wooden log at 12 numbered skittles arranged in formation 3.5 meters away, and reach exactly 50 points to win the game.

Playable outdoors or indoors, adaptable to all ages and skill levels, Mölkky combines precision, mental calculation, and strategy in a decidedly convivial atmosphere. You take out the set for “a quick game”… and put it away three hours later.

History and Origins

Mölkky is the heir to a centuries-old game: Kyykkä, a traditional Karelian game (Karelia is a region straddling Finland and Russia). In the 20th century, thousands of Karelians emigrated to Finland, bringing this game with them.

The principle of Kyykkä was as follows: throw a stick called karttus to knock small cylindrical skittles (kyykkäs) out of a square playing area—with, according to tradition, the losers forced to carry the winners on their backs around the field!

The Birth of Mölkky

Modern Mölkky was created in 1996 in the Lahti region of southern Finland by the company Tuoterengas (now Tactic Games). Originally inclusive—Tuoterengas was a professional integration company—the game retains this unique characteristic: novices can compete against champions without being defeated from the start.

The Mölkky brand is registered and now belongs to Tactic Games. In 2021, Tactic reported having sold 1.5 million Mölkky sets in France—an eloquent figure.

Setting Up the Playing Area

Starting Formation of the Skittles

The 12 skittles are placed in a tight formation 3.50 m (± 10 cm) from the throwing line, according to the official arrangement:
Initial formation (from the thrower's perspective):
  7 8
  5 11 6
  9 10 12 3
  4 2 1
  ↑
  throwing line (3.5 m)

After each throw, fallen skittles are stood back up at the exact spot where they landed—the playing area naturally expands as the game progresses.

Required Space

  • Minimum length: 8 to 10 m (skittles move farther away as throws progress)
  • Minimum width: 3 to 4 m
  • Surface: grass, gravel, parquet, paving—Mölkky adapts to almost any surface

Official Rules

Objective

Reach exactly 50 points by knocking down the numbered skittles.

Scoring System

Situation Points Scored
Only 1 skittle knocked down Value of the number on the skittle (e.g., skittle #11 = 11 pts)
Multiple skittles knocked down Number of skittles fallen (e.g., 3 skittles knocked down = 3 pts)
No skittles knocked down 0 points

How a Game Proceeds

  1. Players throw in turn from the throwing line (3.5 m from the skittles)
  2. After each throw, fallen skittles are stood back up where they landed
  3. Standing skittles are not moved
  4. Each player’s score is cumulative after each throw

The 50-Point Rule

  • If a player exceeds 50 points, their score drops back to 25 points
  • The game ends as soon as a player reaches exactly 50 points

The 3-Miss Rule

If a player misses 3 consecutive throws (no skittles knocked down), they are eliminated from the game.

Game Formats

Format Number of Players Context

Variants and Tournament Formats

Variation Description
Back to 25 Classic version: exceeding 50 brings you back to 25 (instead of 50)
Back to 0 More punitive version: exceeding 50 resets the score to 0
Giant Mölkky XXL skittles for festive events and children
Night Mölkky Phosphorescent or illuminated skittles for evening events
Swiss system Tournament format where everyone plays the same number of rounds
Direct elimination Classic format from the final stages onward

Strategy and Technique

The Throw

  • The Mölkky must be thrown by hand, without forced rotation
  • The release height influences trajectory and accuracy
  • You must throw from behind the line—the entire body must remain behind it

Strategic Fundamentals

Early game: aim for high-value skittles (11, 12, 10, 9) to score quickly. The skittles are close together, throws are simpler.

Mid-game: the skittles scatter. You must juggle between isolated skittles (number value) and groups (number of skittles). Constantly calculate possible combinations to reach 50.

Late game: precision takes priority over power. Aiming for an isolated high-value skittle is often safer than attempting to knock down a group.

Classic Pitfalls

  • Exceeding 50: the player’s nightmare. Always calculate before throwing.
  • Ignoring opponents’ skittles: in competition, blocking access to opponents’ key skittles is a valid tactic.
  • Neglecting the 3-miss rule: late in the game, a player under pressure can string together misses and be eliminated.
